Dear Sal- years ago when I still lived in Ptown, you’d made “Easter” eggs out of sugar (I believe).

With them you included tiny flashlights lights to peep what was otherwise unseen from the outside.

I wondered how they would age, and how they could be best preserved.

I’d love to see them again. They struck me as so enchanting, secret, private and special.

Before I moved to Ptown in 92 I was living in Raleigh making ice cream.

We’d stick the fresh batches in the freezer, cover them with paper indicating flavor, and put a thick-ish rubber band around the entire thing.

Whenever it was time to flip flavors, I’d eagerly gather the replacement.

Removing the paper and the now-frozen rubber band, it felt so fragile and brittle.

My favorite part of this endeavor was solely to get to the frozen rubber band.

I’d clasp it tightly in my hand and waited to feel as it transformed back to a soft, stretchy, reusable tool. The sensation was delightful, and almost but not quite instantaneous.

Over and over I’d volunteer to haul the freezing cold, heavy, metal containers- just to feel that heat exchange contraction from the formerly frozen band.

Frozen in expansion, now collapsed into something soft, something with give.

Thank you for sharing.

More later.

Warmly,

Molly
